Level I – Foundations of Practice: In this 5-day introductory workshop, participants learned and practiced the basic elements of Playback Theatre. In particular, they identified and developed the skills needed for transforming true stories into improvised enactments that are rich in artistry, attunement and effective ensemble work. In addition to learning various Playback performance forms, they also focused on voice development, movement practice, acting skills and group improvisation. Over the duration of the workshop, participants gained experience in the roles of Conductor (facilitator), Actor and Musician. They also experienced the structure of a full Playback performance from beginning to end.
Level II – Playback, Power and Social Change: In this 5-day workshop, participants engaged in storytelling, enactment and other processes that explore their own histories of power, privilege and political agency. Using case examples from around the world, they also examined the role of Playback Theatre within initiatives that promote critical consciousness and sociopolitical change. Additionally, this workshop explored the practice and ethics of performing stories that contain themes of adversity, hardship and trauma. The workshop culminated in a small performance for invited guests. Their time together included ample opportunity for movement practice, voice work and playful connection.
