This three-year training program offered a unique opportunity for people who wish to develop skills in therapeutic drama methods.

The program involved a series of 6 intensive retreats in Dahshur residence occurring between November 2014 and August 2017.

Each retreat took place over 7 days within a residential setting, thus allowing for minimal distractions and maximum immersion.

The program included ample opportunity for practice and reflection upon protagonist-centred psychodramas and other action methods.

In the second and third year, each participant gained experience as facilitators of psychodramatic group work within their respective communities and workplaces.

Supervision, critical reflection, student directing, extra-curricular peer-support, readings and journaling assignments also helped each participant to develop their innate capacity to become catalysts for personal and social change.

The student cohort consisted of 10 – 15 practitioners from the fields of community health, social work, psychiatry and psychotherapy. Students, artists, activists, organizers and others with an interest in therapeutic drama methods were also welcome to apply.

Successful graduates emerged with a Certificate in Psychodramatic Group Work issued by Studio Emad Eddin Foundation, Orient Productions and the Egyptian Association for Group Therapies & Processes.

  • Playback And Psychodrama workshops by By Ben Rivers (Australia) at Studio Emad Eddin

Playback Theatre is an interactive theatre approach used in over 60 countries as a tool for community building, trauma response and conflict transformation. In a Playback event, audience members share real life stories, and watch as a team of actors and musicians transform these accounts into improvised theatre pieces.

These workshops are accredited through the Arab School of Playback Theatre – an affiliate of the New York-based Centre for Playback Theatre. Workshop hours can be counted towards an internationally recognized Diploma in Playback Theatre.

Psychodrama utilizes drama methods for psychotherapeutic purposes. Through the use of voice, movement, stories, dreams, role-play and improvisation, psychodrama enables safe expression of emotion, whilst inviting fresh perspectives and insights to emerge. The Therapeutic Spiral Model (TSM) is a specific form of Psychodrama used for building strengths and addressing individual and collective trauma.

  1. Foundations of Playback Theatre, This workshop explored these uses of Playback Theatre, in addition to voice development, movement practice and improvisational skills. In this 5-day intensive workshop, participants learned and practiced the basic elements of Playback Theatre. In particular, they developed their ability to identify the central themes and events that a ‘Teller’ presents in their story. They also explored ways to translate these ‘narrative cornerstones’ into improvised enactments that are rich in artistry, attunement and effective ensemble work.

  1. Performing Playback This 4-day intensive provided Playback Theatre practitioners with an opportunity to deepen their understanding, skills and application of the method. Participants developed the ability to improvise full stories in ways that combine social and political awareness with artistry and empathic attunement. This workshop was open only to participants who completed the introductory level.

  1. Psychodrama and the Therapeutic Spiral Model In this 4-day introductory workshop, participants experienced and reflected upon the use of Psychodramatic methods for healing, empowerment and transformation.

  1. Awakening Our Aliveness – Continuing Practice in Psychodrama Through group work and Psychodramatic methods, participants moved towards greater awareness and empowerment. In particular, they investigated and addressed experiences, beliefs and behaviors that inhibit our ability to live life fully. They also developed their capacity for a life of creativity, conscience and constructive action. This workshop was open to those who have completed a foundational course in Psychodrama.

  1. Psychodrama Practice In this 4-day intensive, participants used Psychodrama, group work and body-centred approaches to develop their sense of insight and awareness.  In particular they addressed beliefs and behaviours that block their ability to connect fully with themselves and those around them. In doing so, they developed their capacity for a life of spontaneity, creativity and constructive action.

  1. Continuing practice in Psychodrama this workshop was open only for people who have completed at least one prior Psychodrama course with Ben Rivers. Whether one has completed one Psychodrama course – or many – this workshop provided participants with a safe and stimulating environment within which to continue their journey towards a life of greater awareness, connection and empowerment.
