This workshop is designed to offer an in-depth exploration of Boulay’s approach to theater direction. Participants will gain hands-on experience in developing their artistic processes, working closely with Boulay to refine their techniques and creative visions.

Philip Boulay is an experienced theater director known for his rigorous and generous approach to actor direction, with a strong focus on the nuances of language. His work with playwrights like Bernard-Marie Koltès and Amin Erfani highlights his skill in navigating complex dialogues, whether in lengthy exchanges or choral scenes.  Participants will work with texts from Just the Sound of the Waves and In the Solitude of Cotton Fields, exploring how to bring these complex dialogues and choral scenes to life on stage.Boulay’s direction ensures that even the most intricate texts are fully understood by the audience, emphasizing the importance of making the language actively “heard.”

Committed to a theater where interpretation is fully embodied, Boulay believes that true acting engages the entire body, creating “a thought in action” that resonates immediately with the audience. His work is deeply influenced by masterpieces like those of Koltès, which have left a lasting imprint on his career. Boulay is passionate about sharing this approach with both actors and fellow directors, passing on a practice that is both thoughtful and deeply rooted in the art of theater.
