Phase 1- By Saad Samir (Egypt): This workshop dealt with the basic elements of lighting, starting with the nature of electricity and moving on to equipment. The workshop was aimed at Egyptian free theatre groups and concentrated on practical issues, how to light a show with the minimum of resources and limited budgets. Participants were taken to the local market to look at the equipment available and to two theatres to get a feeling for the environments, and to meet and talk to their lighting designers and technicians. Practical demonstrations of the equipment and their application in lighting a scene were an important element of the workshop.
Phase 2- By Saad Samir (Egypt): This workshop was built around the introduction of a state-of-the-art lighting system into Studio Emad Eddin. This began with the installation of lighting bars and electricity, and ended with the setting up of the equipment itself.
Phase 3- by Stancil Campbell (Canada): Campbell, who was the Chair of the PVA department at the AUC & Professor of Design and Technical Theatre, discussed lighting design in this workshop, by dividing it into three sections:
• Detailed discussion of lighting equipment, color and its importance in creating mood, and positions of lighting equipment to attain desired effects
• Play analysis and the role of the lighting designer and director
• The development of the lighting plan
Guest Speakers: Dr. Mahmoud El Lozy (Drama professor, Acting, Play Writing and Theatre Director at AUC) & Ahmed El Attar (Theatre Director)
Phase 4 – By Charlie Astrom (Sweden): Astrom, who is a Theatre Director and Lighting Designer, focused on developing the knowledge acquired in phase three about lighting design and the development of a lighting plan.
Phase 5 – By Charlie Astrom (Sweden) and Saad Samir (Egypt):
In this one month Master Class, it was an opportunity allowing three of the best participants in the workshop to follow the creative lighting design of the performance “About Othello or Who’s afraid of William Shakespeare” directed by Ahmed El Attar and Nevine El ibiary.
